Geneva, Switzerland 27 November 2018 – Today, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) launched a new web-based tool, offering insights into how local policies can increase the use of low-carbon fuels.

The tool, developed in partnership with organizations working on low-carbon fuels, is the first to highlight dos and don’ts in local policy making to support the use and development of below50 fuels – that is fuels that produce at least 50% less CO2 emissions than conventional fossil fuels.

“Decarbonizing our transport system is crucial to decoupling emissions from economic growth,” said Damiana Serafini, Transport Manager at the WBCSD. “Low-carbon fuels have a crucial role to play in this transition.”

Isabel Welten, Head of Marine at GoodFuels said “More effective policy can make the business case for stakeholders/customers to switch from fossil to low-carbon fuels. Low-carbon fuels will play a significant role in decarbonizing heavy transport – the transition must start now.”

The new tool will help speed this transition, as it works to illustrate strong policies and how they can be developed in tandem with business.

“Governments have a critical role to play ensuring that low-carbon fuels are deployed effectively across all transport modes so that we can start to curb emissions in this sector. The IPCC and IRENA alerted us again this year that sustainable biofuels are essential to meet our global climate commitments, but current action is insufficient. This policy tool is a welcome initiative as it points at what has worked so far and what can be replicated,” said Nour Amrani, Senior Manager of Public Affairs at Novozymes.

WBCSD released the tool on the heels of We Mean Business and WRI’s “Ambition Loops” report, that also illustrates the positive outcomes that can arise from strong business action and strong climate policy.

The tool will continue to incorporate insights from below50 supporters throughout 2019, helping policy makers and businesses navigate a continuously changing policy landscape. It was developed with key contributions from DSM, GOL, GoodFuels, LanzaTech, SkyNRG and Novozymes.

below50 is part of WBCSD’s project Transforming Heavy Transport, working to reduce emissions from freight and logistics operations.
